The Physical Pen Rule (IRC § 6061)

You and your spouse (if filing jointly) must sign and date the bottom of Form 1040 Page 2 in blue or black pen. Include your occupation and a daytime phone number.

"Timely Mailed = Timely Filed" (IRC § 7502)

Under federal law, your return is deemed filed on the date of the USPS postmark. Always use USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt (PS Form 3811).

Processing Timelines
